Beyond joins techUK - and why that matters for UK tech M&A

Last month, techUK welcomed its April cohort of new members - and we were quietly delighted to see Beyond on the list, alongside Cooley LLP, IGEL Technology, Spectro Cloud, Scottish Futures Trust, Stateful Robotics and others. It''s a genuinely interesting mix - law, infrastructure, cyber, robotics, public-sector innovation - and that mix is the point.
What techUK actually does
techUK is the UK''s trade association for the technology sector. With more than 1,000 member organisations - from FTSE-listed platforms to early-stage scale-ups - it''s one of the most influential industry bodies in the country. Its mission is simple: bring together people, companies and government to realise the positive outcomes that digital technology can achieve.
In practice, that means:
- Convening industry and Whitehall on the policy questions that actually shape the market - AI governance, cyber resilience, data, digital infrastructure, skills and procurement reform.
- Leading the tech sector''s engagement on Local Government Reform (LGR) - the reorganisation of councils into new unitary authorities, and the once-in-a-generation replatforming of local public services that comes with it.
- Running working groups, councils and committees where members shape positions on everything from the AI Safety Institute''s work to the future of public-sector cloud.
- Acting as a serious, evidence-led voice for UK tech - particularly important at a moment when AI policy, sovereign capability and economic growth are all colliding on the same desk in Westminster.
If you''ve ever wondered who''s actually in the room when the rules get drafted - a lot of the time, it''s techUK.
Why this matters for M&A
Tech M&A doesn''t happen in a vacuum. The deals we work on - buy-side tech due diligence for PE, sell-side exit readiness for founders, and post-merger integration for operators - are shaped by exactly the policy and market forces techUK convenes around.
A few examples from the last twelve months alone:
- AI capability and governance are now a standing item in tech due diligence. What "responsible AI" means in a target''s stack is no longer a footnote - it''s a value driver and a risk register entry. (See our AI in M&A series for more.)
- Cyber resilience and supply-chain security are being priced into deals, not just insured around them. Read our take in the IT DD checklist.
- Local Government Reform is quietly reshaping a whole segment of the UK software and services market. As two-tier councils consolidate into new unitaries, incumbent contracts get re-let, data estates get merged, and a generation of local-gov SaaS, integration and managed-service businesses suddenly look very different to a buyer. We''re already seeing LGR show up in commercial diligence - concentration risk, contract novation, re-procurement exposure - on deals where it wouldn''t have featured a year ago.
- Public-sector procurement reform more broadly is reshaping the addressable market for a whole tier of UK SaaS and services businesses.
- Skills and immigration policy directly affect the deliverability of the integration plans we sign off on.
Being closer to the organisations and conversations driving those shifts makes us better at our job.
What we hope to contribute
We''re a small, specialist firm - but we sit at an unusual vantage point. Through our work on Tech Due Diligence, Exit Readiness and Post-Merger Integration we see, in granular detail, what''s actually inside hundreds of UK tech businesses: the architecture, the team, the security posture, the AI experiments that worked and the ones that quietly didn''t.
That pattern data is something we''d like to bring into techUK''s working groups - particularly around tech due diligence standards, AI in M&A, LGR-exposed GovTech, and post-deal value creation.
We''re also keen to listen. Most of techUK''s membership is operating businesses, not advisors. Hearing directly from CTOs and CEOs about where policy is helping or hurting them is far more useful than another industry report.
Thank you, techUK
Thank you to the techUK team for the welcome, and to the other April members - we''re looking forward to meeting you. You can read techUK''s original announcement here on LinkedIn.
If you''re a techUK member working on AI assurance, cyber, digital infrastructure or LGR-exposed services and you''d value an outside-in view from the M&A side of the table, get in touch.
